The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed the crash of a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) ATR-42 aircraft near the Naval Base in Igbokoda, Ondo State, ordering an investigation to determine the cause of the mishap.
According to an official statement signed by the Director Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, the aircraft was on a routine mission from Benin City to Lagos when it crashed, with military personnel and some members of their families on board.
The DHQ expressed deep shock over the incident and extended heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of all persons involved, as well as the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, the Nigerian Air Force and the wider Armed Forces community.
The Defence Headquarters said the investigation was being conducted in compliance with the directive of the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to ascertain the circumstances and cause of the accident.
It added that Search and Rescue operations were continuing at the crash site, with the NAF working in collaboration with sister Services and emergency response agencies.
Describing the incident as a painful loss to the Armed Forces and the nation, the DHQ said the sacrifices of military personnel who give their all in the service of the country would not be forgotten.
The Armed Forces also assured Nigerians that it remained resolute in fulfilling its constitutional mandate of securing the nation despite the setback.
The DHQ appealed to members of the public to refrain from speculation and respect the privacy of the affected families while official procedures and rescue operations continue.
