The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the alleged attack and obstruction of its presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, during his visit to Benue State to commiserate with victims of the Yelwata massacre.
According to an official statement signed by Osa Director, National Publicity Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, the party alleged that suspected hired thugs blocked Obi’s convoy and prevented him from gaining entry into Yelwata community, where more than 270 people were reportedly killed.
The NDC alleged that the group was led by an aide to the Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, and was armed with dangerous weapons.
Obi, according to the statement, said he arrived in Benue at about 9 a.m. with the intention of visiting victims and families affected by the killings but was stopped from proceeding into the community by individuals chanting, “Peter Obi, go back.”
The presidential candidate said his visit was not politically motivated but intended to allow him mourn with bereaved families, listen to affected residents and offer solidarity following the tragedy.
“I came to Benue not for politics but to mourn with our people, to listen to families who have lost loved ones, and to offer our solidarity during a moment of unimaginable pain,” Obi was quoted as saying.
Reacting to the incident, the NDC described the alleged obstruction as “shameful” and “deeply troubling,” arguing that citizens and political leaders should be allowed to show solidarity with communities affected by violence.
The party said Benue residents and Nigerians across the country deserved to live, travel and farm without fear, stressing that the primary responsibility of government was the protection of human life.
While acknowledging that access to Yelwata was denied, the NDC said its thoughts and prayers remained with the victims, their families and the entire community.
The party also called on the Benue State Government and relevant security agencies to investigate the incident, identify and prosecute those responsible, and ensure the safety of citizens and leaders seeking to commiserate with victims of violence.
The NDC vowed that it would continue to advocate for the protection of Nigerians and would not be deterred by the incident.
