The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, has called for a stronger alliance between the Nigeria Police Force and the media in the fight against insecurity, stressing that tackling the country’s security challenges requires collective efforts from all stakeholders.
Disu made the call on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, while speaking as Guest Speaker at the public presentation of the Vanguard Chronology at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos State.
The event, themed “Fighting Insecurity in Nigeria: The Need for Media Collaboration,” was held as part of activities marking the 40th anniversary of Vanguard newspaper and attracted dignitaries from the political, business, diplomatic, security and media sectors.
According to an official statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the IGP commended Vanguard Media Limited for its contributions to the Nigerian media industry, particularly its founder and publisher, Mr. Sam Amuka.
Disu described the media as a critical component of national security, noting that the fight against insecurity should not be left solely to law enforcement agencies.
He said the relationship between the Police and the media must evolve beyond the traditional source-and-reporter arrangement into a strategic partnership built on trust, responsible journalism and shared national interests.
The IGP also warned about the security implications of misinformation and disinformation, urging journalists and media organisations to prioritise credible reporting, media literacy and responsible dissemination of security-related information.
He equally called for prompt and effective communication by security agencies, stressing that timely access to accurate information would help prevent the spread of false narratives capable of undermining public confidence and security operations.
On police accountability, Disu stressed the importance of transparency in addressing cases involving misconduct by police personnel. He noted that meaningful partnership with the media could only thrive when there was mutual willingness to cooperate, accept scrutiny and uphold accountability.
The IGP further identified public trust as one of the most valuable assets of the Nigeria Police Force, urging media stakeholders to deepen their engagement with the Force as part of efforts to build a safer society.
He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to maintaining a safe and secure environment while strengthening strategic partnerships with the media to advance national security.
Disu stressed that success in the fight against insecurity would represent a shared victory for the Police, the media and Nigerians at large.
