The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu has called for stronger regional collaboration among governments, security agencies, traditional institutions and communities to tackle the worsening security challenges confronting the North-West.
Disu made the call on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, while delivering the opening address at the North-West Security Summit in Gusau, Zamfara State.
The summit, hosted by the Zamfara State Government, brought together governors, traditional rulers, security chiefs, experts, development partners, civil society representatives and other stakeholders to deliberate on banditry, kidnapping, arms proliferation, communal conflicts, farmer-herder tensions and other security threats in the region.
According to an official statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the IGP stressed that no single security agency, government or institution could effectively secure the North-West without coordinated action.
He called for improved intelligence sharing, stronger cooperation among neighbouring states, coordinated security operations, enhanced border security and effective early-warning mechanisms to enable authorities respond swiftly to emerging threats.
The IGP also underscored the importance of traditional rulers and local communities in the fight against insecurity, urging them to provide credible intelligence and support security agencies in preventing and combating criminal activities.
Disu cautioned stakeholders against ethnic and religious profiling in responding to security threats, stressing that criminality has no ethnicity and terrorism has no religion.
He urged security agencies to focus on identifying and dismantling criminal networks, their sponsors, arms suppliers, informants and other facilitators, irrespective of their background or affiliation.
The IGP further reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to intelligence-led policing, technology-driven operations, rapid response and inter-agency collaboration as part of efforts to restore peace and security in the region.
- He charged participants to ensure that the three-day summit produces practical and measurable resolutions capable of strengthening security, protecting vulnerable communities and restoring public confidence across the North-West.
