The Nigerian Navy has rescued three passengers from a capsized boat along the Bennett River in Warri, Delta State, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and ensuring safety on Nigeria’s inland waterways.
According to an official signed statement by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the rescue operation was carried out by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) DELTA during a routine maritime security patrol in the area.
The statement disclosed that the naval patrol team observed distressed passengers and floating debris from a capsized boat, indicating an unfolding maritime emergency. Acting swiftly, the personnel immediately launched a search and rescue operation which led to the successful recovery of the three victims and the salvage of valuable items from the wreckage.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the boat capsized as a result of severe weather conditions and rough waves caused by a heavy rainstorm.
Following the rescue, the victims were evacuated to the NNS DELTA Sick Bay, where they received prompt medical attention. They were subsequently discharged after their conditions were stabilized.
The Navy noted that the successful operation highlights its dual responsibility as both a maritime security force and a first responder to emergencies within the maritime domain. It added that sustained naval presence and routine patrols remain critical to enhancing maritime safety, protecting lives, and providing timely assistance to waterway users in distress.
