The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the conduct of ASP Newton Isokpehi following the circulation of a viral video showing the officer making threatening remarks against members of the public filming police activities, describing his actions as unacceptable and inconsistent with the professional standards of the Force.
According to an official signed statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, the Nigeria Police Force stated that the conduct and utterances displayed by the officer in the video were unprofessional and contrary to the ethics, standards and code of conduct guiding police personnel.
The statement noted that such behaviour runs against the ongoing reform initiatives of the Force aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, professionalism and citizen-focused policing across the country.
The Force reiterated that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, has consistently maintained that members of the public have the right to lawfully record police officers carrying out their duties, provided such recordings do not obstruct operations, compromise safety or interfere with lawful police activities.
The Police further disclosed that the officer involved had been identified and summoned to the Anambra State Police Command Headquarters where immediate disciplinary procedures had already commenced.
“The Nigeria Police Force does not tolerate threats, intimidation, abuse of office, or any conduct capable of undermining public trust and confidence in law enforcement institutions,” the statement added.
The Force also reaffirmed that recording police activities remains a legitimate tool for public accountability and transparency and should not attract harassment or intimidation from police personnel while carrying out their lawful duties.
It added that a formal statement detailing the outcome of the disciplinary measures against the officer would be communicated in due course.
The Nigeria Police Force appreciated members of the public for their continued partnership and constructive engagement towards promoting accountability, professionalism and improved policing standards nationwide.
