The Nigeria Police Force has initiated disciplinary and legal proceedings against an officer following the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State.
According to an official signed statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command responded to intelligence from Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway.
Preliminary findings indicate that the suspect had been apprehended by members of a transport union while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition. However, while officers were making arrangements to take the suspect into lawful custody, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm in breach of established rules of engagement, resulting in the suspect’s death.
Police authorities have since ordered the immediate transfer of the officer and other members of the team to Force Headquarters, Abuja, where they are to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee. The process is expected to determine appropriate sanctions, including possible prosecution.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has extended condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring that justice will be pursued in line with the law. He also called for calm, urging the public to allow due process to take its course.
The Force reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on extra-judicial actions and abuse of authority, stressing that any conduct capable of eroding public trust will be decisively addressed.
