The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works, Mpigi Barinada Barry, describing his passing as a profound loss to Nigeria and the nation’s infrastructure development efforts.

Umahi made the remarks while delivering a goodwill message during a Night of Tribute held on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja. The event attracted prominent dignitaries, politicians, chieftains of the All Progressives Congress and the People’s Democratic Party, as well as traditional leaders from Ogoniland.

In a statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Works, Mohammed A. Ahmed, the minister expressed deep sorrow over the demise of the lawmaker, noting that his death remains painful and difficult to accept given his significant contributions to national development.

Reflecting on his relationship with the late senator, Umahi said their closeness was strengthened through the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, which gave him the opportunity to observe Mpigi’s character firsthand.

He described the late lawmaker, who represented Rivers South-East Senatorial District, as a man of impeccable integrity whose word was his bond, stressing that such consistency is rare in politics.

Umahi also praised Mpigi’s dedication and loyalty, describing him as a bridge-builder who united colleagues across party lines in the national interest. He recalled the senator’s key role in the emergence of Godswill Akpabio as Senate President, noting that Mpigi distinguished himself as a national figure committed to projects beyond his immediate constituency.

According to the minister, the late senator consistently advocated infrastructure development across several states including Lagos, Ogun, Sokoto, Kebbi and Kano.

Umahi said Mpigi’s leadership as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Works strengthened legislative oversight and deepened collaboration between the National Assembly and the Federal Ministry of Works, helping to ensure the delivery of key national infrastructure projects.

He particularly highlighted the senator’s role in addressing major challenges affecting strategic road projects such as the Bodo–Bonny Road and the rehabilitation of the Eleme–Onne section of the East–West Road in Rivers State. Umahi noted that Mpigi’s calm disposition, humility and selfless approach to public service, combined with his strategic interventions, were instrumental in ensuring progress on the projects.

The minister further revealed that in recognition of the late senator’s dedication to public service, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the rerouting of a section of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway to pass through Ogoniland as a lasting tribute to Mpigi’s legacy.

Umahi expressed regret that the late lawmaker would not witness the commissioning of several landmark projects he contributed to, including the Bodo–Bonny Road, the redesigned Eleme–Onne Road and sections of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway.

He assured the bereaved family of the Federal Government’s continued support, pledging that the Ministry of Works would work with relevant stakeholders to sustain and actualise the developmental vision championed by the late senator.

“We will not forget his family, his community and his good intentions for Nigeria. His legacy of integrity, patriotism and service will continue to inspire the nation and guide ongoing infrastructure development efforts,” the minister said.

Umahi also prayed for the repose of the late senator’s soul and urged Nigerians to take solace in his impactful life and enduring contributions to national development.
