The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has strengthened its political foothold in Bayelsa State following the defection of Comrade Doubara Kumokou, popularly known as “Youth Governor,” alongside thousands of his supporters.
Kumokou, a kinsman of the state governor, formally announced his defection at the party’s state secretariat in Yenagoa, a move seen by observers as a significant boost to the NDC’s grassroots mobilisation and political structure in the state.
Addressing party members and supporters during the event, Kumokou expressed appreciation to Seriake Dickson, the National Leader of the NDC, for what he described as his enduring contributions to the political development of Bayelsa.
He noted that Dickson’s political influence played a major role in the emergence of his kinsman as governor, a development he said brought pride and upliftment to his family and community.
The “Youth Governor” explained that his decision to join the NDC was informed by what he described as the credible leadership and consistent performance of Dickson across different public offices.
According to him, the NDC offers a political platform anchored on integrity, purposeful leadership and people-centred policies.
“I and my supporters have carefully followed the leadership direction of the NDC and we are convinced that this is the right political family to align with. We are fully committed to the ideals of the party and will work tirelessly to advance its vision in Bayelsa State,” Kumokou said.
In a statement issued by the NDC Bayelsa State New Media Director, Mr. Gabriel Ukuta, the party said the defection forms part of a growing wave of political realignments in the state.
The statement noted that the development further positions the NDC as a strong political force capable of challenging existing political structures in Bayelsa.
Welcoming the defectors, the Bayelsa State Chairman of the party, Hon. Dauperebo Ikuromo, described their decision as both timely and strategic.
He said the move reflects a broader shift in the political consciousness of the people of Bayelsa.
“The Nigeria Democratic Congress is fast becoming the heartbeat of Bayelsa politics. This defection is not just symbolic; it reflects the growing trust of the people in our vision and commitment to service,” Ikuromo said.
He assured the new members of full integration into the party’s structure and reaffirmed the NDC’s readiness to deliver responsive governance that prioritises the welfare of citizens.
The party chairman also hinted that more high-profile defections could occur in the coming days, urging members and supporters to remain united as the party’s political momentum continues to build.
According to the statement, the entry of Kumokou, who commands a strong grassroots following, could significantly reshape political alignments ahead of future elections in the state.
Political observers say the latest development signals a new phase in the evolving political landscape of Bayelsa as the NDC continues to consolidate its presence across the state.
