Tinubu Reinforces Operation Savannah Shield After Deadly Kwara Attacks

The Federal Government has intensified security operations across Nigeria’s North Central region following the killing of about 75 villagers in Kwara State, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reinforcing a renewed offensive aimed at protecting vulnerable communities and restoring confidence in public safety.

In an official signed statement, the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed that the strengthened security push, code-named Operation Savannah Shield, involves the coordinated deployment of military personnel, police units, and national forest guards to reinforce security assets across the affected theatre.

According to the statement, the operation is backed by enhanced intelligence capabilities and rapid-response protocols operating under the expanded security mandate earlier established by President Tinubu when he declared a state of emergency on national security. The renewed offensive is designed to consolidate recent security gains while preventing further attacks on civilian populations.

President Tinubu condemned the Kwara killings as “beastly” and “heartless,” describing them as emblematic of what he termed a doomed campaign by terrorists who deliberately target soft targets. He directed that the full weight of the State be brought against all individuals and groups threatening peace and stability in the region.

With heightened deployments now underway in at-risk communities, the President reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding Nigerian lives and upholding the fundamental right of citizens to worship freely. The government has consequently implemented enhanced security measures around places of worship, including increased visible security presence around churches on Sundays. These efforts are being coordinated closely with local communities and faith leaders to ensure both effectiveness and public reassurance.

Further reinforcing the security architecture, the Nigeria Police Force has executed a large-scale redeployment of officers previously assigned to VIP escort duties nationwide. The reassigned personnel have been returned to core community policing functions, significantly boosting security presence across Kwara, Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa, Niger States, and the Federal Capital Territory.

The President has consistently maintained that Nigeria’s counter-terrorism operations will remain Nigerian-led and sovereignty-driven. However, the government has indicated its openness to broad-based cooperation with international partners, including the United States, particularly in the areas of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. Such cooperation, the statement emphasised, will align strictly with Nigeria’s national interests and strategic objectives.

The reinforcement of Operation Savannah Shield signals what government officials describe as a decisive escalation in efforts to neutralise terrorist threats, protect vulnerable communities, and sustain security momentum across the North Central states.
