Nigeria’s strategic importance as a pillar of stability in West Africa came into focus on Tuesday, 13 January 2026, as the Polish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Michał Cygan, paid an official courtesy visit to the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, at the Nigerian Air Force Headquarters in Abuja.
During the visit, the Polish envoy described Nigeria as a stabilising force in the region, highlighting the critical role played by the Nigerian Armed Forces, particularly the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), in counter-insurgency operations and broader regional security efforts. He commended the professionalism, resilience and sustained commitment of Nigerian troops in confronting complex security challenges, noting that Nigeria’s strategic position and continuous engagement in security operations have continued to make significant contributions to peace and stability across West Africa.
In an official statement signed by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the Ambassador expressed Poland’s interest in exploring practical avenues for bilateral defence cooperation with Nigeria. According to him, such cooperation would be geared towards supporting Nigeria’s security priorities while strengthening mutual ties between both countries. He emphasised that Poland recognises Nigeria’s leadership role in regional security and is keen on deepening engagement in ways that would yield tangible benefits for both nations.
Responding, Air Marshal Aneke underscored the growing importance of strategic international partnerships in addressing contemporary and asymmetric security threats. He noted that the Nigerian Air Force remains firmly committed to leveraging cooperation with friendly nations to enhance operational effectiveness, build capacity and strengthen information exchange in support of national security objectives. The CAS reaffirmed the Service’s openness to mutually beneficial partnerships that not only reinforce counter-insurgency capabilities but also contribute to regional and global security.
Discussions during the meeting centred on strengthening bilateral defence cooperation, with particular emphasis on identifying areas of collaboration that would support and project the Nigerian Air Force’s ongoing counter-insurgency operations across the country. Both sides acknowledged the evolving nature of security threats and the need for sustained collaboration, knowledge sharing and defence diplomacy in effectively addressing them.
The visit further highlighted the value of defence diplomacy in fostering mutual understanding, enhancing operational cooperation and deepening bilateral relations between Nigeria and Poland. It also reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s enduring commitment to professionalism, partnership and sustained international engagement in support of peace, stability and security within Nigeria and the wider region.
