The Federal Emergency Management Department (FEMD) has reopened the slip road connecting the Goodluck Jonathan Expressway to Ring Road II at the Galadimawa Interchange, months after it was barricaded at the height of the rainy season to prevent recurring flooding and protect road users.
The slip road, which was closed on July 1, was officially reopened following the end of the rainy season. Speaking during the removal of the barricade, the Acting Director-General of FEMD, Engr. Abdulrahman Mohammed, explained that the temporary closure was a precautionary measure taken to avert loss of lives as construction work to address the persistent flooding continues on the corridor.
Represented by the Head of Forecasting, Response and Mitigation, Mr. Mark Nyam, the Ag. DG noted that the yearly closure, though simple, has proven effective in guaranteeing public safety. “This yearly ritual is very small but mighty because it goes a long way to save lives before the completion of the ongoing construction work,” he said.
Assistant Chief Resident Engineer of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Abdulkadir Musa, also addressed the reopening, clarifying that a permanent engineering solution is under construction. He emphasized that the project is extensive and capital-intensive, involving major structural components including a bridge. He added that the seasonal closure of the slip road remains a necessary interim measure to safeguard motorists until full construction is completed.
The recurring flooding in the area has long been a safety concern. In 2019, a tragic incident at the same axis claimed the life of the Director of Finance of the FCT High Court, Mr. Tony Okwechime, an event that continues to reinforce the importance of stringent safety precautions.
With the reopening of the slip road, FEMD and FCDA reassured residents that efforts are ongoing to deliver lasting flood-control infrastructure, ensuring the safety and smooth movement of motorists year-round.
