The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has entered into a strategic partnership with Landmark University to deepen climate science education, enhance meteorological research, and strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to respond to environmental challenges. The collaboration, sealed through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), is expected to significantly improve climate data generation, analysis, and application across key sectors of national development.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, said the partnership aligns with the agency’s mandate to deliver more accurate, data-driven forecasts and early warning systems. He explained that the initiative will support advanced research in critical areas such as drought monitoring, flood risk analysis, agricultural climate services, and improved disaster preparedness. According to him, the growing complexity of climate-related challenges makes it imperative to strengthen scientific collaboration between government agencies and research institutions.

Prof. Anosike noted that the MoU would also expand NiMet’s capacity to deliver timely meteorological insights that can help communities make informed decisions, especially in agriculture, water management, and infrastructure planning. He expressed optimism that the partnership would foster innovation that contributes to national resilience and sustainable development.

On his part, the Pro-Chancellor of Landmark University, Dr. Olumuyiwa Oyeniyi, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to creating a vibrant ecosystem for research, innovation, and climate education. He stated that Landmark University will engage actively in joint studies, academic exchanges, and field projects designed to transform scientific findings into practical solutions for farmers, policymakers, and local communities confronting the realities of climate change.

Dr. Oyeniyi emphasized that the university’s investment in climate-focused programs, modern infrastructure, and community outreach initiatives positions it as a strong partner in advancing national climate goals. He added that the collaboration will help bridge the gap between classroom learning, scientific knowledge, and real-world environmental needs.

The MoU underscores the vital role of partnerships between academic institutions and government agencies in addressing climate change and promoting sustainable national development. With NiMet’s technical expertise and Landmark University’s research strength, the initiative is expected to create a more robust framework for climate monitoring, environmental education, and climate-smart innovation across Nigeria.
