The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of a suspected criminal following a confrontation with a soldier on duty at the Delta Marine Logistics and Technical (DMLT) Estate in Warri, Delta State. The incident occurred on Monday, 13 October 2025, during a scuffle in which the soldier acted in self-defence.

According to an official statement signed by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 63 Brigade Asaba, Captain Iliya Bawa-Rijau, the confrontation ensued when the soldier, who was stationed at the DMLT Estate gate, stopped a group of individuals attempting to force their way into the premises without undergoing routine security checks.

The statement explained that the soldier had halted the group to ascertain their identities and purpose of visit, in line with standard operating procedures. However, the individuals reportedly became aggressive and unruly when questioned. “The suspected criminals became violent when asked who they were looking for and why they were trying to enter without clearance,” Captain Bawa-Rijau said.

The situation quickly degenerated into a physical struggle, during which the soldier, acting in self-defence, employed armed combat skills to subdue one of the attackers. The suspect sustained injuries in the process and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention but was later confirmed dead.

Captain Bawa-Rijau disclosed that the Otu-Jeremi Police Division in Delta State was promptly notified about the development for necessary investigation and further action.

He reiterated that the Nigerian Army remains committed to upholding law and order while ensuring the protection of citizens’ rights. “The Brigade wishes to reiterate to the good people of Delta State the need to remain law-abiding and to subject themselves to checks in line with subsisting standard operating procedures,” he stated.

He further assured that respect for the fundamental human rights of all citizens continues to be prioritized in the conduct of military duties across Delta State and other operational areas.
