Tension gripped Wawa Cantonment in Niger State over the weekend following the tragic death of a Nigerian Army personnel, Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, and his wife, in what appears to be a case of murder-suicide.

According to an official statement signed by the Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 22 Armoured Brigade, Ilorin, Captain Stephen Nwankwo, the shocking incident occurred on Saturday, 11 October 2025, within the premises of the 221 Battalion, Wawa Cantonment.

Captain Nwankwo explained that the soldier, Lance Corporal Femi, who was serving under the 22 Armoured Brigade, was suspected to have killed his wife before taking his own life. Their lifeless bodies were discovered in their apartment located at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters, leaving the entire Cantonment community in disbelief.

He revealed that preliminary investigation indicated that the soldier was on duty within the Cantonment when he sought permission from his superior officer to attend to some personal needs and return to duty. However, it was shortly after that his body and that of his wife were found.

“The tragic incident has caused a tensed atmosphere, leaving the barracks residents in shock as to the circumstances that could have led to such an unfortunate occurrence,” Captain Nwankwo stated.

He added that the remains of the deceased have been preserved, while an in-depth investigation has since commenced to unravel the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The Nigerian Army deeply regrets this development and commiserates with the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased over the painful loss. The Army prays for the peaceful repose of their souls,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, the Commander, 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, has assured that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the events that led to the sad occurrence.

Brigadier General Barkins further assured the general public that the findings from the investigation will be made public, emphasizing that the Nigerian Army will also review its internal welfare and psychological support mechanisms to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

“The Nigerian Army anticipates maximum understanding and cooperation of the public as always, assuring that the outcome of the investigation will not only be made public but will also be critically examined to ensure preventive measures are put in place,” the Commander stated.
