The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has issued a strong condemnation following the assault of a female corps member, Miss Edema Elohor Jennifer, in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

In a statement released by the NYSC Management, the Scheme described the incident as ridiculous and unacceptable, noting that the welfare and safety of corps members remain a top priority that must not be compromised under any circumstances.

Preliminary findings revealed that operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group allegedly stormed a corps members’ lodge in Oba on claims that it was being used for unconfirmed illegal activities. During the operation, the vigilante operatives reportedly demanded that all occupants submit to a search, during which the corps member who was on a visit to the lodge was physically assaulted.

NYSC noted that the matter has since been reported to the police, and investigations as well as other necessary actions are already underway.

The management further reiterated its unwavering commitment to safeguarding all corps members across the country and warned that it will not tolerate any act that threatens their security or violates their dignity. It also urged members of the public, host communities and security agencies to ensure adequate protection for corps members in their various places of primary assignment and residences.

The NYSC emphasized that corps members are national assets whose services contribute meaningfully to community development, and therefore deserve the full support and respect of the communities in which they serve.
