The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, has assured residents of Plateau State and other troubled areas under Operation SAFE HAVEN of the armed forces’ commitment to implementing enhanced strategies to end the ongoing wave of violence and restore lasting peace.
General Musa gave the reassurance on Friday, 1 August 2025, during an operational visit to the Headquarters of Operation SAFE HAVEN in Jos, Plateau State. According to an official statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the CDS noted that the Nigerian Armed Forces are re-evaluating their current strategies to counter bandit attacks and address the asymmetric nature of the ongoing conflict in Plateau and neighboring states.
While addressing commanders and troops during the visit, General Musa emphasised the need for adaptability in military operations, particularly in the face of unconventional threats. He called on community leaders to encourage their youth to identify and isolate criminal elements within and across local communities in order to prevent further unrest and promote peace.
“We must take decisive actions to halt the cycle of violence affecting Plateau and neighboring states experiencing similar challenges,” he stated, stressing that commanders must exhibit a heightened sense of responsibility. He further pledged that anyone found neglecting their duties would be held accountable, even as he promised improved logistical support to bolster operational efficiency.
Receiving the CDS at the Headquarters, the Commander of Operation SAFE HAVEN and General Officer Commanding 3 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Eyitayo Folusho Oyinlola, briefed him on the operational achievements recorded so far, despite recent security setbacks. He reaffirmed the commitment of the troops to protect vulnerable communities across the region and revealed that the Command had deepened collaboration with sister security agencies to strengthen intelligence gathering and facilitate joint responses to threats.
“We are determined to complete the peace process we have embarked upon with visible results across our entire joint area of operations,” Major General Oyinlola assured, adding that Operation SAFE HAVEN will not relent in its efforts to restore calm to the state and beyond.
As part of his visit, General Musa also toured the Nigerian Army Medical Centre located at Tigi and Sector 6 in Jebbu Bindi, both within Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State. He pledged his support for the medical facility, promising to provide necessary resources to ensure it delivers quality and efficient healthcare services to frontline troops and members of the host community.
While addressing troops stationed in Jebbu Bindi, the Defence Chief urged them to remain vigilant and committed to their duties. He also stressed the importance of maintaining strong and respectful relationships with local communities as a vital component of long-term peacebuilding and security stabilization.
