President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, by an additional one year. Mr. Adeniyi’s current tenure, which was originally set to expire on August 31, 2025, will now continue until August 2026.
This was disclosed in an official statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga. According to the statement, the extension was granted to allow Mr. Adeniyi consolidate ongoing reforms and complete critical initiatives aligned with the administration’s trade and economic agenda.
President Tinubu’s decision to extend Mr. Adeniyi’s tenure comes as a vote of confidence in his leadership of the Customs Service. Since his appointment, Mr. Adeniyi has spearheaded major institutional reforms aimed at modernising the Nigeria Customs Service and boosting its operational efficiency. His tenure has also witnessed significant progress in the implementation of the National Single Window Project, a cross-agency digital integration effort designed to simplify Nigeria’s trade processes.
In addition, Mr. Adeniyi has played a key role in coordinating the Customs Service’s contribution to Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol, which seeks to create a unified market for goods and services across the continent.
President Tinubu commended the Customs boss for his dedication to service and expressed confidence that the extension would further enable the Service to deliver on its core mandate of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and robust border security.
The announcement is expected to provide continuity for the Customs Service as it continues its institutional transformation under Mr. Adeniyi’s stewardship.
