It was a day of celebration, emotion, and deep pride as Parliament International School marked its 22nd Speech, Prize-Giving, and Graduation Ceremony in Abuja, drawing together parents, students, teachers, alumni, and distinguished guests in a grand celebration of academic achievement, discipline, and vision. The ceremony, held within the school premises, was a vibrant testament to the school’s long-standing commitment to nurturing not just scholars, but responsible, future-ready citizens.
From choreographed dances to cultural presentations, spirited debates and soul-lifting speeches, the event was a rich tapestry of talent, culture, and intellect. It showcased not only the academic brilliance of the students but also their creativity, critical thinking, and bold self-expression. A total of seventy-three students graduated from Junior Secondary School to Senior Secondary School, while eighty-two completed their Senior Secondary School journey, stepping into the world with heads held high and hearts full of dreams.
In his welcome remarks, Chairman of the Governing Body, Alhaji Abdullahi Yalwa, set the tone for the day with a nostalgic yet optimistic reflection on the school’s journey. “This is the 22nd time I’m doing this, i think i’m getting too old for this,” he said with humour, prompting laughter from the audience. “But we are like the termites of the past, we don’t go away. We keep showing up because we believe in this dream.” Recalling how the school began as just an idea, he praised the early parents who believed in its vision. “All we had recently was an idea, but it was the new parents who made it a reality. Today, I’m glad to say that some of our products are already contributing to sectors like engineering, science, and business across the globe.”
Alhaji Yalwa’s remarks were deeply heartfelt as he urged stakeholders to continue safeguarding the school’s core values. “We accept the burden of building the future. We’re not afraid to take the second position, because it means we’re still on the field, still giving. May God bless our efforts and those who will come after us to uphold this tradition. Our students may be graduating, but they are not finished products. They are stepping into the world to begin applying what they’ve learned here.”
The school’s Principal, Mr. Pius Ikhimeagie, delivered his opening address with warmth and conviction, welcoming guests and congratulating the students and their families. “It is with great joy and pride that I welcome you to our 22nd speech, prize-giving, and graduation ceremony. Today is not just a celebration of academic and extracurricular excellence; it is a major milestone in the lives of our graduating students,” he said.
He commended the prize-winners for their resilience and hard work, urging them to continue setting high standards. Addressing the graduates, he reminded them that while they may be leaving the school, the journey ahead has just begun. “You have come to the end of this chapter, but the story is far from over. Carry with you the values of discipline, determination, and integrity that Parliament International School has instilled in you. Let those values guide your steps as you go into the world.”
Mr. Ikhimeagie also extended heartfelt gratitude to parents and guardians for their support, and to the dedicated teaching staff for their role in shaping the lives of the students. “Success is not a destination, it is a continuous journey of growth, learning, and service,” he concluded.
One of the most stirring moments of the day was a deeply reflective student presentation on the dangers of drug abuse. In a captivating spoken-word performance and dramatization titled “the effects of drug abuse,” senior students took to the stage to raise awareness about the devastating consequences of drug addiction among youths. The presentation was raw, honest, and emotional, leaving a powerful impression on the audience.
“We have seen too many futures cut short by substances that promise escape but deliver chains,” one of the performers recited passionately.”
The presentation painted vivid scenes of peer pressure, broken homes, mental health struggles, and the loss of identity that often drive young people into substance abuse. Through dialogue, the students highlighted the importance of saying “no” to drugs, seeking help, and creating a support system that protects youths from falling into addiction.
“We are the future, and we must protect ourselves,” said a student narrator. “Drugs don’t make you stronger. They steal your potential. They cloud your mind, rob you of your peace, and turn dreams into dust. Let us rise as a generation that chooses clarity, not confusion; strength, not substance; hope, not despair.”
The presentation drew thunderous applause from the audience, with several parents visibly moved by the message. The Principal commended the students for tackling such a critical social issue with maturity and courage. “This is what we mean by education that transforms. You have used your voices to ignite change, and that is powerful,” Mr. Ikhimeagie said.
Among the day’s other memorable highlights were student interviews filled with youthful optimism. Young Olivia beamed as she shared her excitement about her transition into JSS1. “I feel okay and ready for any task,” she said. When asked which discipline she was leaning towards, she confidently replied, “Art. I want to be a lawyer.” Her words were met with cheerful applause.
Another student, Miracle, was visibly joyful and equally prepared. “I’m happy,” he said, smiling from ear to ear. He expressed his desire to pursue a science path and become a medical doctor. His calm but determined tone reflected the confidence the school had instilled in him.
The event also provided an opportunity for parents to share heartfelt reflections. Mrs. Aisha, a visibly proud parent, praised the school’s commitment to academic excellence and a nurturing environment. “As a mother, I am very particular about where my children learn. So far, this school has been wonderful in grooming them both academically and morally,” she said.
Another parent, who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed optimism about the school’s continued growth. “With the way things are going, Parliament International School is bound to produce even more outstanding graduates in the years to come,” the parent remarked.
Mr. Emmanuel, father to one of the graduating students, testified to the school’s impact on his son. “Since enrolling my son here, I have seen tremendous improvement in both his academics and his character. This school produces students who are truly worthy in both learning and character,” he said proudly.
The high point of the ceremony included a wide range of performances, Contemporary Dance and Choreography, graceful Ballet displays, a spirited debate session, captivating cultural dances, and the grand presentation of awards to outstanding students across various categories. Each act was a celebration of the students’ diverse talents and a testament to the holistic education the school offers.
As the curtains fell on the 22nd Graduation Ceremony of Parliament International School, there was a shared sense of fulfillment and hope. Teachers beamed with pride, parents wiped tears of joy, and students stood tall, knowing they had reached a major milestone. But more importantly, they left knowing that they carried within them the values, vision, and voice that would shape the future.
Parliament International School, once again, affirmed its role not just as a place of learning, but as a cradle of potential, where students are not only taught to succeed, but to lead, to inspire, and to build a better tomorrow.
