In a renewed effort to strengthen civil-military relations and promote collaborative approaches to national development, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, CFR, on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Minister of State for Regional Development, Alhaji Maigari Uba Ahmadu, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.

According to a statement signed by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the visit was aimed at fostering mutual understanding and aligning military efforts with regional development priorities across Nigeria. The engagement forms part of the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s (AFN) non-kinetic strategy to promote national security through multi-sectoral partnerships.

While addressing the Minister and top officials of the Ministry, General Musa underscored the deep interconnection between security and development, noting that “communities with more development often enjoy more peace.” He reaffirmed the military’s commitment to supporting the Ministry’s initiatives and expressed readiness to collaborate in advancing regional stability and prosperity.

The CDS also commended the Ministry for its role in enhancing military capability, particularly through the training of the AFN Special Forces. He described the partnership as a strategic boost to the military’s operational readiness, stating that such inter-agency cooperation is essential for addressing Nigeria’s complex security challenges.

“We recognise the vital role your Ministry plays in building inclusive development across our regions. The Defence Headquarters will continue to offer all necessary support to help you achieve your mandate,” General Musa said.

In his response, the Honourable Minister of State, Alhaji Maigari Uba Ahmadu, described the visit as historic and a clear testament to the growing synergy between defence and development institutions in Nigeria. He commended the Armed Forces for their sacrifices in preserving the nation’s unity and territorial integrity, especially in the face of terrorism and other security threats.

The Minister expressed deep appreciation for the military’s diverse peacebuilding initiatives, particularly those that focus on education and rehabilitation. He singled out the military’s efforts in establishing schools for the children of repentant insurgents as a model of sustainable reintegration and societal healing.

Alhaji Uba Ahmadu also paid glowing tribute to fallen soldiers, acknowledging their bravery and selfless service to the nation. “Their sacrifices will never be forgotten, and their legacy continues to inspire our commitment to a united and peaceful Nigeria,” he stated.

The meeting concluded with both parties agreeing to strengthen collaboration in areas of mutual interest, especially in supporting regional commissions and implementing programs that address root causes of insecurity such as poverty, marginalisation, and lack of infrastructure.
