…says hospitality is one of my major strengths

By Nkechi Eze

In a bid to foster collaboration and open new avenues for economic empowerment and skill development, the Executive Director of the International Hospitality, Tourism & Eco-Sustainability Forum (IHTEF) and Abuja Hotel Expo, Engr. Chibuikem Diala, led a delegation on a courtesy visit to the President of the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs Oghogho Gwabin Musa, on Tuesday, 20 May 2025, at the DEPOWA Secretariat, Abuja.

The visit was aimed at acquainting the DEPOWA leadership with the activities of IHTEF and the Abuja Hotel Expo, while also exploring areas of mutual interest in Nigeria’s growing hospitality and tourism sectors.

In his introductory remarks, Engr. Diala noted that the hospitality outfits operated by DEPOWA and other military services provide essential platforms for internally generated revenue (IGR). He emphasized the need for greater synergy among industry stakeholders including hotel owners, managers, investors, and young professionals to address common challenges and design innovative solutions that generate sustainable economic opportunities.

“Drawing strength from the military’s commitment to peace and security, the hospitality industry aims to entrench hospitality and safety in our communities,” Diala stated. “We must collectively promote peace, stability, and a culture of hospitality to build a more conducive environment for national economic growth.”

He lauded the DEPOWA President for her steadfast leadership and empowering initiatives for women, noting that her dedication has had a transformative impact across the association’s outreach efforts.

In her response, Mrs Oghogho Gwabin Musa warmly welcomed the visiting delegation and expressed strong interest in a future partnership.

“Hospitality is one of my major strengths,” she said. “Any opportunity for positive collaboration that allows our members to improve their skills and contribute to the industry will be welcomed.”

Mrs Musa reiterated DEPOWA’s readiness to support initiatives that enhance professional development, especially among women in the armed forces’ community. She affirmed that hospitality training aligns closely with her administration’s broader goal of promoting empowerment, self-reliance, and sustainable livelihoods.

The visit featured an engaging interactive session, the exchange of souvenirs, and a commemorative group photograph. The event not only reaffirmed DEPOWA’s commitment to national development through empowerment initiatives but also laid the groundwork for a promising partnership with IHTEF and the Abuja Hotel Expo.
