The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa, OFR, led Nigeria’s delegation to the 53rd National Day celebrations of the Republic of Cameroon, held on Tuesday, 20 May 2025, in Yaoundé, the nation’s capital.

The colourful celebration, also known as Unity Day, marked a significant milestone in Cameroon’s history and national consciousness, drawing participation from dignitaries, diplomats, and citizens from across the country. With the theme: “Army and Nation United for a Cameroon Turned Towards Peace and Prosperity”, the event underscored the country’s enduring commitment to unity, peace, and socio-economic advancement.

Director Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau in an official signed statement disclosed that speaking at the event, General Musa expressed his gratitude for the warm reception accorded to the Nigerian delegation. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to strengthening its long-standing relationship with Cameroon, as well as other neighbouring nations, especially in the collective pursuit of regional peace, security, and development.

“The bond between Nigeria and Cameroon is rooted in shared history, mutual respect, and a common desire to tackle transnational security threats. We are here not just as neighbours but as partners in peace and progress,” he said.

The event was graced by His Excellency, President Paul Biya, senior Cameroonian government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and thousands of citizens who turned out to celebrate their nation’s achievements. The grand celebration featured a dazzling display of military parades, exhibitions of defence equipment, solidarity marches, and cultural performances that showcased Cameroon’s national pride and resilience.

A major highlight of the day was the stellar performance by the Nigerian Armed Forces contingent, which made history as the first and only foreign military formation to feature in the ceremonial parade. The contingent thrilled the audience with their precise foot drills, rhythmic musical rendition, and flawless regimental coordination a display that drew loud cheers, admiration, and standing ovations from the crowd and dignitaries alike.

Their participation not only symbolized military excellence but also reflected the depth of bilateral defence ties between Nigeria and Cameroon. It further underscored a shared vision for peace and security within the West and Central African subregions.

The Nigerian delegation’s involvement in the 53rd Unity Day Celebration serves as a reaffirmation of the strategic military cooperation between the two countries, especially in combating cross-border threats such as insurgency, terrorism, and transnational crimes.

The event concluded with warm interactions between the Nigerian delegation and host officials, reinforcing the spirit of diplomacy and partnership that underpins the relations between the two neighbouring nations.
