The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has pledged to support the House of Representatives in advancing transparency, accountability, and open governance within the framework of its legislative agenda.

In a statement made available by Demola Bakare, spokesperson for the Commission, the ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, expressed this commitment during the inaugural National Policy Dialogue on the Legislative Agenda of the House of Representatives held on Monday in Abuja.

Dr. Aliyu stated that the ICPC is open to working closely with the National Assembly, particularly the House of Representatives, in fostering policies and frameworks that promote transparency and ensure that democratic dividends reach the Nigerian populace.

“We are open to initiatives that deepen transparency and accountability. Our doors remain open to the House for collaboration in ensuring the delivery of good governance to the masses,” he said.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, while delivering his address at the event, noted that the policy dialogue is part of the House’s broader commitment to maintaining a transparent and inclusive legislature.

“From the beginning, we promised to engage regularly with citizens, share performance updates, and adjust course based on public feedback. This dialogue is in fulfilment of that promise,” he stated.

He added that the engagement also sets the stage for the upcoming Open NASS Week, which will provide Nigerians with an opportunity to assess the legislature’s midterm performance and offer feedback.

The Speaker further explained that the 10th House developed its legislative agenda following widespread consultations with stakeholders across Ministries, Departments and Agencies, civil society, and development partners. The result, he noted, is a detailed roadmap guiding legislative activities between 2023 and 2027.

He emphasized the alignment of the legislative agenda with President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” initiative, saying that this synergy allows the legislature to function independently while still supporting national priorities.

“Our agenda supports collaborative governance with the Executive to ensure our legislative mandate addresses the pressing needs of the people,” he said.

The Speaker outlined the eight core focus areas of the legislative agenda, which include enhancing good governance, boosting national security, reforming legal frameworks, revitalizing the economy, and advancing social development. The agenda also highlights environmental sustainability, foreign policy alignment with national interests, and fostering inclusive governance through an open Parliament.

He reiterated the House’s commitment to high standards of transparency and public engagement, asserting, “We will continue to demonstrate the courage required to deliver meaningful reforms, even when they are difficult.”

Other keynote speakers present also voiced support for the House’s legislative direction and pledged partnerships that would strengthen democratic institutions and governance outcomes across the country.
