The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, has called on Corps Members to show respect for the cultural values and traditions of their host communities, emphasizing peaceful coexistence and cultural integration.
Acting Director Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu in an official signed statement disclosed that the DG gave this charge during his visits to the NYSC Orientation Camps in Wailo, Bauchi State, and Doi-Du, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State. While addressing Corps Members, General Nafiu stressed the importance of cultural appreciation in fostering national unity.
“Nigeria is richly endowed with diverse cultural heritages. It’s important to learn, understand, and embrace the culture of your host communities. No culture is superior to another,” he said.
He also warned against improper dressing, particularly when in NYSC uniforms, urging the Corps Members to maintain modesty and decency as graduates and national ambassadors. “As much as possible, learn the language of your hosts and familiarize yourselves with them. Don’t disrespect the culture of your hosts. Anywhere you find yourselves, be prepared to serve,” he advised.
In her situation report, the NYSC Bauchi State Coordinator, Mrs. Rifkatu Daniel Yakubu, noted that 1,600 Corps Members—717 males and 883 females—were registered at the camp. She commended the Corps Members for displaying a high level of discipline, patriotism, and commitment to the goals of the orientation course.
Similarly, in Plateau State, the State Coordinator, Mr. Jonathan Yavala, informed the Director General that a total of 1,301 Corps Members—comprising 756 males and 545 females—had been actively participating in all camp activities.
“Morning meditation, drills, lectures, SAED training, Man O’ War, cooking, and social activities are progressing smoothly,” he reported.
The DG’s visit underscored NYSC’s commitment to instilling discipline and promoting national unity through cultural respect and civic engagement.
