The Lagos state government has concluded plans with Circuits of Africa to develop a premier Formula 1-standard race track in the state.

This initiative aims to position Nigeria at the forefront of global motorsport events while driving economic growth and elevating the country’s profile on the international stage.

The state-of-the-art facility will set a new benchmark for motorsport infrastructure in Africa offering the most advanced and highest-grade racing conditions on the continent.

Plans for the race track facility were disclosed during a high-level meeting in Lagos, Wednesday, to formalise agreement for the project between Circuits of Africa CEO, Siu-Anne MarieGill, and key stakeholders from the Lagos State Government.

Officials of the state government include Mr. Sam Egube, Deputy Chief of Staff to the Governor, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, Commissioner for Physical Planning & Urban Development, Mr Lekan Fatodu, Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, and Surv. Ayokunnu Adesina, Surveyor General of Lagos State, amongst other state functionary.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, CEO of Circuits of Africa, Siu-Anne Marie Gill, said, “This project transcends motorsport. It’s about driving economic development, expanding infrastructure, and stimulating a new wave of talent in Africa.

“Lagos is the ideal location for this ambitious vision, and we are thrilled to collaborate with the government and international investors to bring it to life. I wish to extend many thanks to Mr. Seyi Tinubu for providing direction to this initiative from the get-go, and Hon. James Faleke for lending his support.”

Gill commended Mr. Seyi Tinubu for being a strong advocate for sustainable development under the Renewed Hope Agenda, and praised the initiative for its commitment to youth empowerment and national progress.

According to her, “Lagos has always been a metropolis driven by futuristic vision and aspiration, and this project perfectly aligns with our commitment to making Lagos a global hub for sports and tourism.”

She expressed the optimism that the development of the track will open doors to new economic opportunities, propel investment, and create a world-class destination for athletes and enthusiasts.

Popular music act, Innocent Idibia, aka 2Baba, was unveiled as an ambassador of Circuits of Africa at the Lagos meeting.

Circuits of Africa is a pioneering motorsport organisation dedicated to bringing world-class racing to the African continent.
