…highlights the importance of reintegrating IDPs back into their communities

By Nkechi Eze

In a resolute commitment to ending the protracted crisis in the region, the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS)  General Christopher Gwabin Musa has today, 29 January 2024 pledged to intensify efforts aimed at restoring lasting peace in the Lake Chad Basin. This vow comes as a beacon of hope for the millions affected by the humanitarian crisis, which has ravaged parts of Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad, and Niger.

General Musa stressed the importance of unity among regional leaders and stakeholders at the 5th Lake Chad Basin Governors’ Forum in Maiduguri, highlighting its crucial role in promoting stability and development in the region.

In a statement made available to newsmen by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, General Musa described the meeting as timely and pledged the Armed Forces’ unwavering support in addressing security challenges in the region.

The CDS further reaffirmed the dedication of the Armed Forces to collaborate with regional governors to comprehensively tackle the pressing security concerns plaguing the area.

While highlighting the importance of reintegrating Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) back into their communities, the CDS stressed that a combination of kinetic and non-kinetic strategies is crucial in combating criminal activities effectively.

Additionally, regional leaders were urged to unite in tackling security challenges, with a call to action made to leaders at all levels to work harmoniously towards a common goal. This rallying cry was made in the presence of several high-profile dignitaries, including Nigeria’s Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Also, governors from various states, including Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Niger Republic, Chad, and Cameroon, were also in attendance.
