The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) categorically refutes allegations that it was responsible for the explosion at the NNPC wellhead in Buguma Community, Asari-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State. The NAF described the reports as “misleading” and “unfounded,” urging media outlets to verify facts before publishing.

A statement made available to newsmen on Monday 20th January 2025, by the Director Public Relations and Information, Air Vice Marshal Olusola F Akinboyewa maintains that the NAF unequivocally refutes this false and unsubstantiated accusation.

According to AVM Olusola, illegal activities had been occurring in the area for some time, resulting in crude oil leakage from the wellhead.

“Video recordings from previous missions confirm that the wellhead had been leaking for an extended period, resulting in the accumulation of gas and flammable liquids in the surrounding environment.”

He further stated that “High-definition video recordings from its platform, including footage from December 2024, which clearly show the wellhead spilling oil and the barge already burnt before its arrival at the location.

“The onboard camera system ensures transparency and accountability, eliminating any possibility of indiscriminate firing at civilians or destroying assets.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) maintains that it exercises extreme caution before engaging any target, prioritizing the safety of civilians and protecting critical infrastructure. The NAF remains dedicated to safeguarding the nation’s vital infrastructure and combating crude oil theft, adhering to the highest standards of professionalism and respect for human life.

This commitment reflects the NAF’s mission to secure Nigeria’s interests while upholding the values of integrity and accountability.
