The Kano/Jigawa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has achieved outstanding success in 2024, boasting significant revenue growth and effective anti-smuggling operations under the leadership of Comptroller Dauda Ibrahim Chana. Specifically, the command realized a total of N102,503,573,383.31, representing a remarkable 94% increase compared to the previous year.

The command’s exceptional performance is credited to a multi-faceted strategy that combines forward-thinking policies, robust enforcement measures, and state-of-the-art technology to optimize revenue collection.

The command has also bolstered border security operations to combat smuggling and other illicit activities, ensuring the integrity of the revenue system.

Furthermore, engagement with stakeholders—ranging from local communities and businesses to international partners—has fostered trust and cooperation, contributing to sustained growth in revenue.

Command Records Key Anti-Smuggling Successes

As part of its aggressive anti-smuggling campaign, the command made significant seizures, with a total duty-paid value of N235,290,320. Key items confiscated during these operations include:

191 blocks of compressed blue cannabis, 74,870 tablets of Tramadol hydrochloride, and 280 blocks of Indian hemp, all handed over to the NDLEA.

1,290 packs of expired or fake pharmaceutical products, and 750 bottles of Otrivin (15ml), handed over to NAFDAC.

136 bags of 50kg foreign parboiled rice and 238 cartons of spaghetti, macaroni, and couscous.

4,410kg of pangolin scales, intercepted in collaboration with the Wildlife Justice Commission, with one suspect arrested in Mubi, Adamawa State.

5,066 cartons of foreign GIV soap and 58 used tires.

534 cartons of foreign non-dairy creamer milk, 210kg of kola nuts, and 552 bales of second-hand clothing.

Sustained Collaborations

To enhance security and facilitate trade, the command has strengthened partnerships with fellow security agencies and stakeholders, including terminal operators, licensed customs agents, and market associations, resulting in increased collaboration, streamlined processes, and better compliance.

Appreciation and Commitment

Comptroller Dauda Ibrahim Chana expressed gratitude to the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, for his support. He also acknowledged the contributions of sister security agencies and key stakeholders in achieving these results.

The Kano/Jigawa Area Command remains steadfast in its mandate of revenue generation, trade facilitation, and border security, pledging to continue its efforts toward the nation’s economic growth and development.
