By Nkechi Eze

Comptroller Frank Onyeka has taken the reins as the new Customs Area Controller (CAC) at the Tincan Island Port Area Command. This development comes after the promotion of his predecessor, Comptroller DA Nnadi, to the prestigious rank of Assistant Comptroller General (ACG).

Comptroller Onyeka brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his new role, with a strong academic background in Political Science and Public Administration. He has held key positions in the past, including Officer in Charge of the Premier Port Gate and a pivotal role at Onne Port’s Federal Ocean Terminal (FOT) Gate.

During his inaugural address, Onyeka emphasized the importance of collaboration, consolidation, and innovation in aligning with the Comptroller General’s policy thrust. He pledged to build on the achievements of his predecessor, particularly in revenue generation, anti-smuggling efforts, and infrastructure development.

Comptroller Onyeka’s career in the Nigeria Customs Service has been marked by an unwavering dedication to excellence.

His assignments, both on the field and at operational levels, have consistently reflected his intellectual brilliance and courageous leadership.

Prior to his deployment to Tincan Island Port, he served as the Officer in Charge of the Premier Port Gate, where his efforts contributed significantly to the Command’s record-breaking revenue generation.

Additionally, during his tenure at the Onne Port Federal Ocean Terminal (FOT) Gate, Comptroller Onyeka spearheaded transformational innovations, leading to increased revenue collection and notable seizures.

His achievements earned him the distinction of being the first recipient of the Value Addition Officer Award, instituted by the current ACG, B. Imam.

Known for his commitment to trade facilitation, anti-smuggling operations, and revenue generation, Comptroller Onyeka has earned a reputation as a workaholic with a unique ability to deliver results.

In his inaugural address, Comptroller Onyeka reaffirmed his commitment to the policy thrust of the Comptroller-General of Customs, which emphasises collaboration, consolidation, and innovation.

He praised the leadership of his predecessor, ACG DA Nnadi, particularly in the areas of revenue generation, anti-smuggling operations, and infrastructural transformation.

Comptroller Onyeka also highlighted his all-inclusive leadership approach, urging critical stakeholders – including security agencies, freight forwarders, terminal operators, and the media – to work together to uphold the Command’s legacy of excellence.

ACG Nnadi, in his farewell remarks, expressed gratitude to the officers and stakeholders of the Command for their unwavering support during his tenure.

He noted the Command’s impressive performance in revenue collection, announcing a total revenue of N1,226,777,245,874.97 for 2024, which represents 86.8% of the Federal Government’s target of N1,413,460,064,851.62. This marks a significant improvement compared to N716,478,454.00 collected in 2023.

Under his leadership, the enforcement and anti-smuggling units achieved remarkable success, with the Duty Paid Value (DPV) of seized goods rising from N1,051,617,767.00 in 2023 to N4,505,995,975.00 in 2024 – a staggering increase of N3,454,378,208.00.

ACG Nnadi pledged continued support to the Command from his new role at headquarters, ensuring that progress and innovation remain a cornerstone of its operations.

The Tincan Island Port Area Command is poised for a new era of excellence under Comptroller Onyeka’s leadership.

With his impressive track record and collaborative approach, Comptroller Onyeka inspires confidence in the Command’s future success.
