As part of its ongoing efforts to improve traffic management and safety across Nigeria’s major highways, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a collaborative effort with the Nigeria Police Force to tackle traffic congestion on the Niger bridges connecting Onitsha and Asaba. By joining forces with the Anambra and Delta States Commands, the FRSC aims to proactively address traffic gridlock on this critical corridor.

A strategic partnership was formed after a crucial meeting between key stakeholders, including Corps Commander Joyce Nnennaya Alexander, Sector Commander of Anambra State, Anambra State Police Commissioner CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, and his Delta State counterpart, CO BS Oluwafemi. This collaborative effort aims to enhance traffic management and safety on the Niger bridges connecting Onitsha and Asaba.

Part of the interventions to be put in place include; removal of all checkpoints at the Head Bridge from December 18 December, 2024 to January 10, 2025, establishment of mobile surveillance at the Second Bridge axis, dismantling of all police checkpoints on the Delta side of the Old Niger Bridge to facilitate free trafficking flow, as well as adequate deployment of officers for joint traffic control on the two bridges during the yuletide season.

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed commended the Sector Commander for fostering synergy, emphasizing that this collaboration will fortify the Corps’ commitment to ensuring safety and seamless movement for all road users on the Niger bridges, particularly during the festive season.

He urged motorists to extend their full cooperation to road traffic management personnel and adhere strictly to all traffic laws and regulations, promoting a safe and orderly flow of traffic.
