Hajia Zubaida Umar, the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has embarked on an on-the-spot assessment of the recent flood incident in Ondo State.
The Director General was received by the Executive Governor of the state, His Excellency Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa who was on his way to travel out of the state for an official engagement. This reception marked the beginning of the visit, aimed at discussing key issues related to disaster management, emergency preparedness, and the state’s response strategies.
After the meeting with the governor at the airport the Director General proceeded to the Deputy Governor’s Office, where she held a meeting with the Deputy Governor, His Excellency Olayide Adelami. During the meeting, critical discussions were held on enhancing collaboration between NEMA and Ondo State in addressing emergency situations and improving the state’s disaster response framework.
During her remarks at the meeting with the Deputy Governor, the Director General of NEMA stated that her visit to the state was part of an assessment to monitor the response to the flood incident in Ondo town. She commended the collaboration between the agency and the state government through SEMA, in areas such as flood season sensitization. She also encouraged communities to take proactive measures in disaster risk reduction to minimize the impact of future disasters.
In response, the Deputy Governor expressed gratitude for NEMA’s continued support to the state and urged citizens to pay attention to early warnings from authorities. He also emphasized the importance of avoiding construction on waterways and ensuring proper waste management and drainage maintenance.
During the flood assessment in Ondo town, the Director General of NEMA, accompanied by the Deputy Governor and Hon. Abiola Makinde, Member of the House of Representatives for Ondo East and West Federal Constituency, visited His Imperial Majesty, Dr. Victor Kiladejo CFR, the Osemawe of Ondo as part of the Assessment .The team offered condolences regarding the flood incident and reassured His Majesty of the federal government’s continued support through NEMA.
The working visit is part of NEMA’s broader efforts to strengthen partnerships with state governments to ensure timely and effective responses to disasters across Nigeria.
