DG  VON Calls for Concerted Efforts  to Enhance Diplomatic Reporting in Nigeria.

The Director General Voice of Nigeria (VON) Mallam Jibrin Baba-Ndace has called for concerted effort from journalists, media organizations, and stakeholders to enhance diplomatic reporting in Nigeria.

He also noted that  the role of diplomatic reporting serves as the bridge between nations, fostering understanding, cooperation, and peace.

Baba- Ndace made the call at opening ceremony of a Capacity Building Workshop for Diplomatic Correspondence in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

He  stressed on the need for Journalists to receive specialized training in international relations, foreign policy, and diplomatic protocols to acquire  valuable knowledge and skills.

“By investing in training, building strong networks, utilizing technology, maintaining ethical standards, and ensuring the safety of journalists, we can significantly improve the quality of diplomatic reporting. This, in turn, will contribute to a more informed public and a more transparent and accountable international community”.

“Effective diplomatic reporting helps demystify foreign policy decisions and presents the nuanced perspectives of different countries. This type of reporting is essential for promoting transparency and accountability in international affairs”. He stressed 

He further urged journalist to establish strong relationships with embassies, and international organizations so as to get better access to information.

 Building and managing a network effectively is crucial for diplomatic reporters. This involves cultivating relationships with diplomats, foreign correspondents, and international organizations. It is important to maintain professionalism and integrity in these relationships, avoiding any form of pressure or unethical behavior. Collaborate with international media organizations for comprehensive coverage of diplomatic events. Shared resources and expertise can enhance the quality of reporting. He urged

In his remarks, the  Charge d’Affaires of Chinese Embassy, Zhang Yi   said Nigeria is  China’s biggest contractor market and third largest trading partner and major investment destination in Africa

Adding that the, Diplomatic Reporters have a lot to cover on both sides in the area of development, bilateral relations and the common interest in international platforms.

“Since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1971, the media reports, especially diplomatic reporting on Nigeria-China exchanges and co-operations played a key role in helping deepen understanding and enhance mutual trust between the two peoples, thus to tighten the relations and friendship between Nigeria and China”.

In a Lecture, a paper presentation on Advanced Reporting skills, the Special Assistant on Media and Communication Strategy to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alkasim Abdulkadir, said diplomatic reporters have a legacy to pass on, in  shaping the narrative and disseminating accurate information to the public.

Similarly, the Organiser of the Workshop, Ralphel Oni, of Diplomats Extral Magazine said: ” I want to emphasize the importance of fact-checking and verification in our work. We must be vigilant and not get caught in the web of fake stories or propaganda. Our credibility and integrity as journalists are at stake, and it’s our responsibility to uphold the highest standards of ethics and professionalism. He said 

The workshop with the theme: “Enhancing Diplomatic Reporting in Nigeria”. had over 20 participate across media houses in attendance. And was organised by Diplomats Extra magazine, in collaboration with Voice of Nigeria, Chinese Embassy, Nigeria Union of Journalists.
