The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed its planned nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 general elections.
The decision was taken during a meeting between the Commission and the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held on Friday.
In a statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Voter Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Haruna, the Commission disclosed that the postponement followed deliberations by the leadership of INEC on the timing of the exercise.
According to the Commission, the nationwide voter revalidation exercise was originally conceived as a critical component of its statutory responsibility to maintain a credible and up-to-date National Register of Voters.
The exercise is designed to verify and review existing voter records, ensure the accuracy of personal data, eliminate duplicate and ineligible entries, and strengthen the overall integrity of the voter register.
INEC explained that the process would also provide registered voters across the country with an opportunity to confirm their personal details on the voter register and make necessary corrections where required.
The Commission reiterated that maintaining an accurate voter register remains central to the credibility of the electoral process and is part of its broader commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system.
Despite the postponement of the exercise, INEC assured Nigerians that it remains fully committed to its constitutional mandate of conducting free, fair, credible and inclusive elections across the country.
