The National Emergency Management Agency has warned Nigerians to take precautionary measures against fire outbreaks and heat-related health challenges as temperatures continue to rise across parts of the country.

The advisory follows the recent surge in daily temperatures and heatwave conditions currently being experienced nationwide.

According to a statement issued by the Head of the NEMA Press Unit, Manzo Ezekiel, the agency noted that the elevated temperatures have been confirmed in recent weather forecasts released by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, which indicate the likelihood of persistent heat conditions during this period.

The Director-General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar, urged Nigerians to exercise caution in the handling and use of materials or appliances that could easily trigger fire incidents, especially under extreme heat conditions.

She advised households, business operators and public institutions to pay close attention to the safe use of electrical appliances, gas cylinders and other combustible materials, noting that excessive heat can increase the likelihood of ignition.

Umar also stressed the importance of proper storage of flammable substances, avoidance of bush burning and regular checks on electrical connections to minimise the risk of fire disasters.

Beyond fire safety concerns, the NEMA chief also cautioned citizens about the health implications associated with extreme heat conditions.

She encouraged people to take preventive measures such as staying adequately hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and paying special attention to vulnerable groups including children, the elderly and individuals with underlying health conditions.

The NEMA Director-General further urged residents to remain attentive to weather updates and safety advisories issued by relevant authorities, particularly the Nigerian Meteorological Agency and emergency management bodies.

She also encouraged communities to promptly report fire outbreaks or emergency situations to appropriate response agencies for swift intervention.

Umar reaffirmed NEMA’s commitment to strengthening public awareness and proactive disaster risk reduction efforts in line with the Federal Government’s mandate to safeguard lives, property and the environment.
