The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has been named African Public Sector Leader of the Year at the 2026 African Leadership Persons of the Year Awards held in Accra, Ghana.
Professor Anosike received the prestigious continental honour on Saturday, February 28, 2026, in recognition of what organisers described as his transformational leadership at NiMet, particularly in strengthening climate services, advancing early warning systems, deepening aviation meteorology standards, and repositioning the Agency as a strategic institution for national development.
The award ceremony formed a high-level side event of the African Leadership Conference themed “Reimagining African Governance and Development: New Pathways for Economic Transformation and Institutional Renewal.” The conference drew Heads of State, senior government officials, development partners and institutional leaders from across the continent to deliberate on governance innovation, climate resilience and economic transformation in Africa.
Organised by African Leadership Magazine, a leading pan-African publication and policy platform that promotes leadership excellence, governance reforms and sustainable development, the event brought together influential voices from government, business and civil society. Through its annual Persons of the Year recognition, the magazine spotlights leaders driving measurable impact within their institutions and countries.
Professor Anosike’s emergence as African Public Sector Leader of the Year underscores NiMet’s growing stature within Nigeria and beyond. Under his stewardship, the Agency has strengthened operational efficiency and enhanced service delivery across its mandates, particularly in climate intelligence and aviation meteorology.
Industry observers note that NiMet has also been repositioned as one of the most digitally compliant government institutions in Nigeria, embedding transparency, automation and data-driven systems into its core processes. These reforms have significantly improved forecasting accuracy, strengthened early warning mechanisms, and supported national efforts in disaster risk reduction and climate resilience.
Other distinguished honourees at the event included John Dramani Mahama, who was named African of the Year; Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, recognised as African Political Leader of the Year; and Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane, honoured as African Inspirational Leader of the Year, alongside several other continental figures.
For NiMet, the recognition affirms its rising institutional credibility and expanding role in supporting aviation safety, climate-smart planning and national resilience strategies. For Professor Anosike, it marks yet another milestone in a career increasingly defined by institutional renewal, innovation and results-driven public sector leadership.
