The Nigerian Navy has intercepted about 500 kilogrammes of cannabis sativa in Lagos and handed over the seized narcotics to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in a major crackdown on illicit drug trafficking.

The consignment, packaged in five large bags, was seized on February 18, 2026, by the Quick Response Team of Nigerian Navy Ship Beecroft during an intelligence-led operation around Abule Osun in Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The interception followed credible intelligence which led naval operatives to stop a suspicious van believed to be conveying illegal substances.

Speaking during the handover ceremony on Friday, February 20, 2026, the Commander, NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, said the successful operation reflects the Navy’s intensified efforts to combat criminal activities within Nigeria’s maritime environment and adjoining coastal communities.

He noted that the feat aligns with the strategic direction of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, aimed at strengthening maritime security and disrupting criminal networks operating within Nigeria’s maritime domain.

Commodore Adams-Aliu commended the vigilance, professionalism, and swift response of naval personnel involved in the operation, reaffirming the Navy’s unwavering commitment to working closely with other security agencies to secure the nation’s coastal corridors.

He also called on members of the public to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information to enhance ongoing efforts to combat crime.

The seized drugs were formally handed over to the Deputy Commander of Narcotics, Adejumo Gbenga Ayo, of the NDLEA Festac Area Command for further investigation and necessary legal action.

The development highlights growing inter-agency collaboration between the Nigerian Navy and anti-narcotics authorities in dismantling drug trafficking networks and reinforcing security within Nigeria’s maritime and coastal environment.
