The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to safeguarding Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector, as he hosted members of the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream) at the Force Headquarters, Abuja.
The working visit, led by the Committee Chairman, Ikeagwuonu Ugochinyere, was aimed at strengthening security collaboration and enhancing protection of critical petroleum infrastructure, a key component of Nigeria’s economic stability.
According to an official statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Ag. ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, the meeting brought together members of the committee, the Police Management Team, and other senior officers to deliberate on strategies to reinforce security across the downstream oil and gas value chain.
In his remarks, the Committee Chairman commended the Inspector-General of Police for his leadership and proactive policing efforts in protecting national energy assets. He noted that the Police had played a vital role in stabilising operations during recent industrial tensions, strengthening inter-agency cooperation, and combating oil theft and pipeline vandalism.
He emphasised that sustained collaboration between the legislature and law enforcement agencies remains essential to protecting petroleum infrastructure and ensuring energy security.
Responding, the IGP expressed appreciation for the committee’s recognition and reiterated the Force’s readiness to intensify efforts to secure the sector.
He assured the lawmakers that the Police would enhance surveillance operations, improve intelligence sharing, and deepen collaboration with relevant agencies to ensure uninterrupted petroleum supply and maintain investor confidence.
The Inspector-General also appealed to the committee to support the strengthening of the legal framework guiding petroleum infrastructure protection and to facilitate funding for personnel training, acquisition of modern surveillance equipment, and improved welfare for officers deployed to safeguard critical installations.
The engagement underscores ongoing efforts by the Police and the National Assembly to reinforce security in the downstream petroleum sector, curb criminal activities, and ensure stable access to energy resources for Nigerians.
