Niger State marked a major milestone on Saturday, celebrating 50 years since its creation in 1976. The state, affectionately known as “The Power State,” is Nigeria’s largest by landmass and a key contributor to the country’s hydroelectric power, thanks to its Kainji, Jebba, and Shiroro Dams.
In a statement, Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, highlighted the state’s growth and development, while calling for unity and commitment to building a stronger future. “Fifty years is more than a milestone; it’s a testament to resilience, shared sacrifice, and enduring hope,” he said.
The state’s political redefinition into Niger East, Niger North, and Niger South has strengthened unity, with efforts underway to unlock its full economic potential. Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Niger State is benefiting from national growth initiatives and infrastructure renewal.
Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago urged citizens to support his administration’s efforts to drive growth and development, saying, “Let us renew our commitment to the future we seek to build.” The celebration also honored the state’s founding fathers and patriots who laid the foundations of democracy and stability.
Niger State’s golden jubilee serves as a call to action for inclusive growth, sustainable transformation, and responsible leadership, with a focus on delivering real value to its people.
