The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has charged officers and soldiers of 3 Division, Nigerian Army, to remain disciplined, committed and professional, stressing that their role in addressing security challenges on the Plateau is critical to national stability.
The charge was given on Monday, 19 January 2026, during an operational visit to Headquarters 3 Division, Nigerian Army, Jos. The visit was disclosed in an official statement signed by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele.
Addressing troops during the visit, the COAS emphasized that discipline remains the bedrock of the military profession, noting that service in the Nigerian Army is voluntary and anchored on the noble responsibility of defending the nation’s territorial integrity. He reminded personnel that professionalism and adherence to military values are essential to sustaining public confidence and operational success.
Lieutenant General Shaibu disclosed that he had received detailed briefings from the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 3 Division, on both operational and welfare-related challenges confronting troops in the Division’s Area of Responsibility. He assured the personnel that the most pressing concerns had already been addressed, while others were receiving the attention of Army Headquarters.
According to the COAS, Army Headquarters is providing the necessary combat enablers to ensure troops are adequately equipped to carry out their duties effectively. “The welfare of our troops remains a top priority. We will continue to provide the enabling environment for you to do your job properly,” he assured.
He urged young soldiers to respect the chain of command and seek guidance from their superiors, noting that officers bear the responsibility of mentoring subordinates to enable them fulfil their responsibilities and build successful military careers. He also encouraged personnel to maintain high standards of physical fitness and mental alertness, explaining that deliberate measures have been put in place to prepare them for the demands of military service.
Highlighting the importance of leadership at all levels, Lieutenant General Shaibu described Senior Non-Commissioned Officers as the critical link between officers and soldiers, charging them to provide effective middle-level leadership, guidance and mentorship within the ranks.
On ongoing operations in Plateau State, the COAS described the security situation as unique, assuring troops that Operation ENDURING PEACE is being properly guided and supported to achieve its mandate of restoring peace and stability in the area. He further encouraged personnel to channel concerns and grievances through the appropriate chain of command, assuring them that such issues would be promptly addressed.
Reaffirming national appreciation for the sacrifices of troops, the COAS urged personnel to remain proud of their service and to discharge their duties with professionalism and honour, in line with global best practices.
As part of activities during the visit, Lieutenant General Shaibu commissioned two blocks of 30 flats for Non-Commissioned Officers as well as a separate block of residential accommodation for officers at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment, Jos. The facilities form part of ongoing efforts by the Nigerian Army to enhance troop welfare and improve living conditions for personnel and their families.
