The Defence Headquarters has announced the implementation of robust and proactive security measures aimed at preventing attacks and ensuring the safety of lives and property across the country during the Christmas festivities.
The assurance was contained in an official statement signed by the Director, Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, who disclosed that the Armed Forces of Nigeria, in close collaboration with other security agencies, have intensified operations in identified vulnerable areas nationwide.
According to the statement, additional troops have been deployed to strategic locations and major routes, while special forces units and air support elements have been placed on high alert to guarantee rapid response to any emerging threats. These measures, the Defence Headquarters noted, are part of a comprehensive plan to deter criminal activities and reassure citizens during the festive period.
Major General Onoja further revealed that surveillance efforts have been significantly enhanced, including increased aerial monitoring and intelligence gathering, to closely track the movement and communication patterns of suspected criminal groups. He added that unit commanders across all theatres of operation have been directed to strengthen patrols, establish fortified checkpoints, and deepen collaboration with community leaders, local vigilante groups and state security formations.
“As we approach this festive period, the Armed Forces of Nigeria reaffirm their unwavering commitment to protecting the lives and property of all Nigerians. The security and stability of our nation remain our top priority, and every necessary measure is being taken to ensure that citizens celebrate Christmas in peace, unity and joy,” the statement read.
The Defence Headquarters emphasised that public cooperation remains a critical component of national security, urging citizens to remain calm but vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious activities to the nearest security formation. It assured that all information received would be treated with urgency and confidentiality to support ongoing operations.
Conveying the goodwill message of the Chief of Defence Staff, General OO Oluyede, the statement wished Nigerians a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year in advance, while reiterating the military’s resolve to sustain operational tempo throughout the festive season and beyond.
