The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment that empowers Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) to thrive and contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s development. The assurance was given during the commemoration of the 2025 International Day of Persons With Disabilities (IDPD) held in Abuja.
In a signed statement, Director of Information and Public Relations in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Segun Imohiosen, disclosed that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, CON, reaffirmed the administration’s drive to foster a society where everyone regardless of physical ability can excel. Speaking on the theme, “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress,” Akume emphasized that the present administration remains focused on promoting leadership development among PLWDs to ensure their inclusion in strategic roles across various sectors.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary overseeing the General Services Office, Mohammed Sanusi Danjuma, the SGF stated that the Federal Government is dedicated to ensuring equal access to education and employment opportunities for Nigerians living with disabilities. He explained that such efforts are essential in enabling PLWDs achieve their professional ambitions and live fulfilling lives.
Akume also urged Nigerians to reject stereotypes, stigma, and discriminatory barriers against persons with disabilities. He called for a united front in building a society where all citizens enjoy equal access to leadership spaces, resources, and opportunities for participation in political, economic, social, and cultural development.
The International Day of Persons With Disabilities, observed annually, seeks to promote the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities, while raising awareness on the benefits of their full inclusion in all aspects of national and global development.
