The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has moved to reassure Nigerians amid rising security concerns following the recent abductions of schoolgirls in Kebbi and Niger States, stressing that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain fully committed to rescuing the victims and restoring stability across affected communities.

In a statement issued by the Director, Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, the DHQ condemned the abduction of 25 students of Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, in Danko Wasagu LGA of Kebbi State, as well as students of St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, in Agwara LGA of Niger State. The military described the acts as “heinous” and reaffirmed that troops are actively engaged in ongoing operations aimed at securing the safe return of the girls and apprehending the perpetrators.

Major General Onoja also addressed the public controversy surrounding the allegation by the Governor of Kebbi State, who claimed that terrorists attacked “30 minutes after troops were withdrawn” from the school. He confirmed that the Defence Headquarters is aware of the statement and has initiated a thorough review to verify the circumstances surrounding troop movement and deployment in the area at the time of the incident.

He explained that all operational decisions are based on intelligence assessments and the region’s broader security framework, stressing that if the ongoing review uncovers any lapse, the Armed Forces will take immediate corrective action to prevent a recurrence. “We assure Nigerians that the rescue effort is a top priority, and our troops are actively pursuing all actionable intelligence,” he stated.

The DHQ further acknowledged public concerns over the recent spike in insecurity across parts of the North, noting that the Armed Forces are intensifying ground and air operations while working closely with state authorities, community leaders and other security agencies to enhance protection for schools and vulnerable populations.

Reaffirming its commitment to restoring peace, the Defence Headquarters urged citizens to remain calm and assured the nation that decisive military steps are being taken to combat emerging threats and secure every affected community.
