The Minister of State for Defence, H.E. Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, MON, has assured Nigerians that government operations within the Ministry of Defence remain fully active and uninterrupted, even as the Minister of Defence, H.E. Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, attends the 2025 Dubai International Airshow on the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a statement signed by the Assistant Director, Information and Public Relations, Enderline Chukwu, the Minister addressed concerns surrounding the absence of the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; and Minister Badaru at a time of heightened security challenges in parts of the country. He emphasized that their engagements abroad are official, strategic, and fully sanctioned by the President.

Dr. Matawalle explained that the Dubai Airshow is one of the world’s leading platforms for aerospace, defence, and technological innovation, bringing together global industry leaders, innovators, political figures, and defence chiefs to strengthen partnerships and share actionable insights. Nigeria’s participation, he noted, reaffirms the nation’s commitment to defence modernization and international cooperation.

He said the Nigerian delegation is showcasing the country’s growing advancements in defence technology and forging critical partnerships that will enhance Nigeria’s security architecture. “Minister Badaru’s official engagement abroad does not diminish our sensitivity or response to the current security situation at home. Our combined efforts will ensure that we continue to address these challenges effectively,” he stated.

Speaking on the recent abduction of schoolchildren, Matawalle reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to their safe return. “As I mentioned previously, I immediately condemned the abduction and called for our security agencies to coordinate their efforts for the safe return of the students. Our strategies are in place, and we are in constant communication with the relevant authorities to facilitate their safe release.”

The Minister assured that he remains fully on ground to oversee domestic security operations while his senior counterpart is away. “Rest assured, we are doing everything possible to ensure the swift and safe return of the students,” he affirmed, adding that the two-minister structure within the Ministry allows continuity and sustained momentum in handling national security matters.

Matawalle concluded by noting that Minister Badaru will resume direct involvement in ongoing national security efforts immediately upon his return from the Airshow.
