The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has underscored that strong leadership and continuous training remain the most critical pillars of the Nigerian Army’s operational effectiveness as the force intensifies efforts to counter evolving security challenges across the country.

Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, disclosed in an official signed statement that the Army Chief made the remark on Wednesday, 19 November 2025, during his operational tour of the 1 Division Area of Responsibility in Kaduna, his first visit to the Division since assuming office.

Upon arrival, the COAS received an operational briefing before addressing officers at the Division Auditorium, where he stressed that leadership remains the most decisive factor in addressing insecurity and achieving mission success. He urged officers to embody the highest standards of professionalism and character, noting that soldiers must always see their leaders as dependable figures both in peace and in combat.

“Leadership is the most critical element in our efforts to safeguard lives and property,” General Shaibu told the officers. He charged them to demonstrate unflinching dedication, loyalty and purposeful stewardship, reminding them that leading troops in battle is a fundamental responsibility of every officer in uniform.

At a separate engagement with soldiers on parade, the COAS reinforced the need for loyalty, discipline and trust in the chain of command. He encouraged the troops to obey and rely on their commanders, stressing that the execution of their constitutional duties demands unity of purpose, commitment and unwavering professionalism.

General Shaibu further emphasised the indispensable role of training in enhancing military competence, describing it as the “best gift” the Nigerian Army offers its personnel. He urged soldiers to make full use of the wide range of courses and learning opportunities available in Army training schools and divisional institutions to boost their operational readiness and advance personal development.

“Training remains the foundation of military excellence,” he said, encouraging the troops to continually upgrade their skills to meet evolving security demands.

The COAS also assured personnel that their welfare remains a priority under his leadership. To demonstrate this commitment, he commissioned a newly constructed soldiers’ canteen at the Division Headquarters as part of the visit.
