The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has been honoured as one of Nigeria’s Top 100 Environmental and Sustainability Professionals by Environment Africa Magazine in recognition of his groundbreaking contributions to climate resilience, sustainability, and environmental governance.
Professor Anosike, who was represented at the award ceremony by the Director of Applied Meteorological Services, Mrs. Glory Onyegbule, also received a Certificate of Recognition as Nigeria’s Top ECO-HERO 2025, a double honour that underscores his leadership and transformative impact in advancing climate adaptation and sustainability initiatives across Nigeria and beyond.
According to Environment Africa Magazine, Prof. Anosike’s recognition was premised on his forward-thinking approach to integrating meteorological science into national planning, disaster risk reduction, and environmental sustainability. Under his leadership, NiMet has embarked on a transformative drive to make climate data more accessible, actionable, and inclusive — ensuring that weather and climate information directly supports vulnerable communities and critical sectors of the economy.
In recent months, Prof. Anosike has spearheaded key reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s early warning systems, enhancing the accuracy of weather forecasts, and improving the dissemination of impact-based information to help mitigate the effects of floods, droughts, and other extreme weather events. These systems, now powered by advanced digital and AI-enabled tools, are reaching farmers, local governments, and disaster managers in real time through digital platforms and mobile networks.
The NiMet boss has also been a strong advocate for digital climate advisory services, championing the use of technology to deliver tailored weather insights to smallholder farmers who remain highly vulnerable to climate shocks. Through the translation of forecasts into local languages and user-friendly formats, NiMet under his leadership has bridged the long-standing communication gap between scientific data and community-level understanding.
Beyond technical innovation, Prof. Anosike has built a collaborative framework that connects academia, development partners, and the private sector in expanding sustainable infrastructure, scaling weather station networks, and nurturing a new generation of climate scientists. His advocacy for integrating climate risk into urban planning, sustainability reporting, and corporate environmental governance has further positioned NiMet as a central institution in Nigeria’s journey toward resilience and green development.
Speaking on the significance of the award, representatives of Environment Africa Magazine commended Prof. Anosike for his practical leadership and for redefining how meteorological science contributes to sustainable growth. His recognition, they noted, is a reflection of a results-driven commitment to science, collaboration, and social impact.
With this latest honour, Professor Anosike joins an elite class of professionals whose work continues to shape Nigeria’s environmental future, reinforcing NiMet’s strategic role in safeguarding lives, livelihoods, and national development against the growing threats of climate change.
