In a rare and emotional tribute that underscores a lifetime of exemplary service and global recognition, the United States Army War College (USAWC) has posthumously inducted the late Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, the 23rd Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of the Nigerian Army, into its prestigious International Hall of Fame (IHOF), one of the highest honours conferred on distinguished military alumni across the world.
According to an official statement signed by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, the historic induction took place on Monday, 13 October 2025, during the opening ceremony of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Annual Convention held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Centre, Washington D.C., United States.
The USAWC Commandant, Major General Trevor J. Bredenkamp, presented the posthumous award in recognition of the late General Lagbaja’s sterling leadership, visionary service, and exceptional contributions to military professionalism and international peace and security. The honour, delivered in a solemn yet colourful ceremony, celebrates his rise to the pinnacle of military command and his enduring influence as an alumnus of the USAWC.
Lieutenant General Lagbaja’s induction marks a historic milestone, he becomes the first Nigerian Army officer ever enshrined in the International Hall of Fame in the institution’s 124-year history, a feat that cements his legacy as one of Africa’s most respected military leaders. He was one of six eminent inductees honoured at this year’s event.
Representing the current Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, at the ceremony was Major General Adeleke Ayannuga, who received the honour on behalf of the late COAS, alongside Mrs. Maria Abiodun Lagbaja, the widow of the fallen general. The moment, deeply emotional yet dignified, reflected the admiration and respect General Lagbaja commanded within the global military community.
Among dignitaries present were the Director General, Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre, Major General G.O. Adesina; Director General, Defence Headquarters Joint Doctrine and Warfare Centre, Major General G.T.O. Ajetunmobi; and Mrs. Deborah Aboderin of the Office of Security Cooperation, U.S. Embassy, Abuja.
Also in attendance were the Nigerian Defence Attaché to the United States, Nigerian Army officers currently undergoing higher military education at the National Defense University, the U.S. Army War College, and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, alongside other senior Nigerian Army officers participating in the AUSA 2025 Annual Convention.
In a statement, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, expressed profound pride and emotion over the recognition, describing it as a moment of honour not only for the Lagbaja family but also for the entire Nigerian Army. He noted that the induction immortalizes the late General’s distinguished service, leadership ethos, and unwavering dedication to the ideals of professionalism, discipline, and global peace.
“This recognition bestowed upon one of our finest officers is a testament to the Nigerian Army’s enduring values and our collective commitment to excellence and international cooperation. The late Lieutenant General Lagbaja exemplified courage, vision, and selfless service, virtues that continue to inspire generations of officers,” General Oluyede stated.
The USAWC International Hall of Fame was established to honour alumni who have risen to the highest positions in their respective armed forces or who have rendered exceptional service in promoting international peace and security. General Lagbaja’s inclusion, therefore, not only celebrates his individual brilliance but also reinforces Nigeria’s growing stature within the global military community.
Through this recognition, the legacy of Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja endures as a symbol of excellence, patriotism, and international respect, forever etched in the annals of the world’s military history.
