The Nigeria Police Force has taken a decisive step in strengthening its security architecture with the commissioning of 59 armoured Toyota Hilux vehicles in Abuja, a major boost to its operational capabilities in tackling rising and evolving criminal threats across the country.

The commissioning ceremony, which drew attention from across security circles, underscores the Federal Government’s renewed commitment to repositioning the Police Force for greater efficiency, professionalism, and public trust.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olukayode Egbetokun, who officially commissioned the vehicles, described the development as a clear demonstration of the Force’s readiness to deliver tangible results in the fight against crime. He said the vehicles were not just an addition to the Police fleet but a symbol of resolve, innovation, and operational advancement.

“These specially equipped Hiluxes, built for high-risk operations, offer protection against hostile fire and mobility across challenging terrains, ensuring tactical units can respond swiftly and safely to security challenges nationwide,” the Inspector-General declared.

He explained that the armoured Hiluxes are fitted with advanced protective features, designed to withstand intense operational environments and guarantee officer safety in volatile situations. Their deployment, he said, will enhance rapid response times, mobility, and resilience of tactical units during counter-crime operations, particularly in high-risk areas.

While acknowledging the importance of advanced security equipment, Egbetokun stressed that the effectiveness of the new assets ultimately depends on the professionalism and integrity of officers. He reminded police personnel that discipline, courage, and accountability remain the foundation of the Force’s operational strength. “This deployment aligns with a broader reform agenda aimed at enhancing intelligence, training, and accountability in the Nigeria Police Force,” he stated.

The Inspector-General also disclosed that more armoured vehicles are expected in the coming days, to be distributed across commands nationwide. He noted that Police Commanders have been issued strict directives to ensure the vehicles are used exclusively for operational purposes, with robust monitoring and accountability frameworks already in place to prevent abuse.

In a firm warning to criminal elements, IGP Egbetokun sent a clear message that the Police are now better positioned to deal with lawlessness decisively. “The Police have enhanced mobility and operational strength to counteract lawlessness effectively. Criminals are advised to turn over a new leaf or face the consequences of the law,” he warned.

He, however, cautioned police personnel to uphold professionalism in their duties, stating that the legitimacy of the Force derives from its commitment to respect for human rights and the rule of law. “Officers are reminded to conduct all operations lawfully and professionally, as the legitimacy of the Force rests on respect for the rule of law,” he emphasized.

The Inspector-General attributed the milestone to the support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the government’s investment in police reforms and operational equipment is anchored on a broader vision of restoring peace, enhancing safety, and rebuilding public confidence in Nigeria’s security system. “This initiative reflects a renewed commitment to ensuring safer communities, faster response times, and restored public confidence in Nigeria’s security apparatus,” he said.

The commissioning of the 59 armoured Hilux vehicles represents another phase in the Nigeria Police Force’s modernization drive, which seeks to reposition the institution as a technologically-driven, intelligence-led, and people-centred law enforcement agency. It also reflects the government’s determination to confront the country’s multifaceted security challenges with strategic reforms and tangible investments in personnel and infrastructure.

For communities across Nigeria, the deployment of the new armoured vehicles is expected to strengthen police presence, deter criminality, and provide assurance of swifter interventions in times of need. For the officers, it is a call to renewed service, responsibility, and dedication to protecting lives and property under a safer and more robust operational environment.
