The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the official commencement of campaigns for the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election, in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 and the Commission’s timetable and schedule of activities.

According to a statement signed by the National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, political parties participating in the election are now permitted to begin their electioneering campaigns in public from Wednesday, 24 September 2025. The campaign period will run until midnight on Thursday, 19 February 2026.

INEC reminded political parties, candidates, and their supporters of their obligations under Sections 92 and 93 of the Electoral Act 2022, which prohibit the use of abusive language, physical attacks on opponents, or the destruction of campaign materials during rallies, processions, and meetings.

The Commission further emphasised that all parties and candidates must be given equal and unhindered access to public facilities for media campaigns, outdoor advertising, public rallies, and meetings. For clarity, Section 95(2) of the Electoral Act expressly prohibits the use of incumbency to the advantage or disadvantage of any party or candidate.

The 2026 FCT Area Council election has been scheduled to hold on Saturday, 21 February 2026.
