The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has applauded the Nigerian-born athlete Jovan Olafioye, who has been officially inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, Class of 2025. She described the recognition as an accomplishment that brings immense pride not only to the honoree but also to Nigeria and its global diaspora community.
In an official statement issued by Gabriel Odu of NiDCOM’s Media and Public Relations Unit, Dabiri-Erewa highlighted Olafioye’s stellar career in the Canadian Football League (CFL), which spanned nearly a decade and left a lasting legacy.
During his eight seasons with the BC Lions, Olafioye distinguished himself as one of the league’s most reliable and respected players. He helped the Lions to a Grey Cup championship in 2011, earned several All-Star selections, and clinched the prestigious Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman award in 2012. Known for his leadership and consistency on the offensive line, Olafioye was admired both on and off the field.
“This honor is a source of pride for Nigeria and the Nigerian community worldwide, in addition to being a significant personal accomplishment for Olafioye. His induction serves as a testament to the Nigerian diaspora’s expanding influence in a variety of fields, most notably international sports,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.
The NiDCOM boss further stressed that Olafioye’s achievement reflects the talent, determination, and resilience of Nigerians excelling across the globe. She said his story stands as an inspiration to young Nigerians and aspiring athletes, both at home and abroad, proving that dedication and perseverance can open doors to the highest levels of professional recognition.
Olafioye now joins a select group of sporting legends enshrined in the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, a recognition that cements his place in the history of North American professional football while also spotlighting the excellence of the Nigerian diaspora on the world stage.
