In a bold step toward redefining the future of insurance in Nigeria, the Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA) has officially launched its 2025 Innovation Lab, an ambitious initiative designed to harness technology and collaboration to transform the industry.

The launch ceremony, held at the Insurers House in Victoria Island, Lagos, brought together a cross section of stakeholders including members of the NIA Governing Council, chief executives of member companies, technology partners and other industry leaders.

Speaking at the event, the Chairman of NIA, Mr. Kunle Ahmed, described the Innovation Lab as a historic milestone for the insurance sector, noting that the initiative fulfils a commitment he made at his inauguration in October 2024 to champion digital innovation and industry-wide collaboration. “Innovation is not a luxury; it is a necessity,” he said. “This lab represents our commitment to leadership and transformation. It is where the future of insurance will be imagined and built.”

Mr. Ahmed explained that the Lab goes beyond a physical location, calling it a movement to foster creativity, test cutting-edge technologies and develop practical solutions tailored specifically for the Nigerian market. With Nigeria’s median age now at 18 years, he underscored the urgent need for the insurance industry to adapt to a youthful, tech-savvy population that expects fast, inclusive and digitally-driven services. He observed that emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain and data analytics present new opportunities for improving efficiency, enhancing trust and expanding access to insurance services nationwide.

The NIA Chairman expressed gratitude to key partners for their commitment to the initiative and called on tech firms, regulators and member companies to collaborate closely to ensure the Lab delivers long-term value to the industry. “The future begins now, and it begins here,” he declared.

Delivering a presentation on the inaugural ‘State of Insurance Innovation in Nigeria 2025’ survey, the Chairman of the NIA Innovation Committee, Mr. Tunde Fajemirokun, said the survey engaged 45 senior industry leaders including 22 CEOs, 10 Chief Technology Officers and 13 Heads of Strategy across life, general and micro-insurance companies. “Their voices, captured here, highlight where the industry must focus and how collaboration can unlock transformation,” he said. According to the survey results, 87 per cent of executives expressed willingness to collaborate on shared solutions, while 69 per cent confirmed readiness to commit resources to innovation in 2025.

Guests at the ceremony described the Innovation Lab as a timely and transformational step that will reposition the Nigerian insurance sector to compete globally and better serve the needs of citizens.
